Theses

A guide to locating theses can be found at Theses@Library

University of Melbourne

Theses (or dissertations) are formal papers based on original research, usually associated with Higher Degree studies. Generally they are unpublished works (though many are later published in book form).

Masters and PhD Theses completed at the University of Melbourne are held in the Special Collections section of the Baillieu Library. They are on closed access, though can be read in the Special Collections Reading Room on the 3rd Floor.

Theses are listed on the Library Catalogue. A Keyword search is the best option when you wish to check whether a thesis has been completed on a specific subject at the University of Melbourne: Type in relevant subject keywords followed by the words and thesis. (Remember the Card Catalogue if you are searching for theses completed before 1980)

Theses completed by students in the History Department are also held in the Jessie Webb Library in the Department. (4th Year, Masters and PhD).

Other Australian Universities

The Union List of Higher Degree Theses ( -1991), held in the Reference section of the Baillieu Library (Baill REF 011.70994 Unio) can help you to identify theses completed at other Australian Universities.

International

Proquest Digital Dissertations indexes theses and often provides access to substantial 24 page previews.
